Requirement 1b discussion guide

Use these notes to discuss injuries that can happen during programming activities and how to prevent and respond to them.

Repetitive stress injuries

Prevention

  • Keep wrists in a neutral position and avoid bending them sharply while typing.
  • Take short movement breaks often so hands, shoulders, and forearms are not under constant strain.
  • Use a chair, keyboard, and desk setup that lets elbows stay relaxed and close to a 90-degree angle.

First aid and response

  • Stop the activity and rest the sore area before pain gets worse.
  • Use a cold pack for short periods if there is swelling or irritation.
  • Tell a parent, leader, or other trusted adult if pain keeps returning or starts affecting normal hand use.

Eyestrain

Prevention

  • Follow the 20-20-20 idea: every 20 minutes, look at something far away for about 20 seconds.
  • Reduce screen glare and keep the monitor at a comfortable brightness and distance.
  • Blink often and make sure the room lighting is not much darker or brighter than the screen.

First aid and response

  • Look away from the screen and rest your eyes for several minutes.
  • Adjust lighting, text size, or screen brightness if your eyes feel tired or dry.
  • Ask an adult for help if headaches, blurred vision, or eye discomfort continue.
