Make a simple labeled diagram and explain how each component helps complete the circuit and ring the bell.

What to draw

  • Battery, wires, switch, electromagnet coil, iron core, armature, contact point, striker or hammer, and bell gong.
  • Use arrows if helpful to show the path of current through the circuit.
  • Label each part clearly so you can point to it when you explain what it does.

Component key

  • Battery: provides the electrical energy that starts current flowing.
  • Wires: connect the parts and provide a path for current.
  • Switch: opens or closes the circuit to control whether the bell can operate.
  • Electromagnet coil: becomes magnetic when current flows through it.
  • Iron core: strengthens the magnetic field made by the coil.
  • Armature: a moving metal piece pulled by the electromagnet.
  • Contact point: the place where the circuit is made or broken as the bell operates.
  • Striker or hammer: hits the bell when the armature moves.
  • Bell gong: the metal bell surface that makes the sound.

How it works step by step

  • When the switch closes, current flows from the battery through the wires and the electromagnet coil.
  • The energized coil becomes an electromagnet and pulls the armature toward it.
  • As the armature moves, the striker hits the bell.
  • That movement also breaks the contact point, which stops the current.
  • Once current stops, the electromagnet loses its pull and the armature springs back.
  • The contact closes again, current starts again, and the cycle repeats rapidly to keep ringing the bell.

  • How electrical energy from the battery becomes motion and sound.
  • Why the bell keeps making and breaking its own circuit over and over.
  • Which parts are for carrying current, which parts move, and which parts make the sound.
